The Oaks Residence is a unique partnership between the Shepherds of Good Hope, Inner City Health and Canadian Mental Health Association. The Oaks is located at 1057 and 1053 Merivale Road in the west end of Ottawa.
It has 55 units in total, spread between two buildings. These units are a combination of one bedroom and bachelor apartments. 45 of the units are designated as domiciliary hostel beds under the city of Ottawa. 15 of the 45 domiciliary beds are currently reserved for ‘aging at home’ residents.
These clients are generally over the age of 65(though exceptions can be made for clients over the age of 55) and typically have physical health issues (mobility, incontinence, etc.), mental health issues, alcoholism or some combination of the three. The other 30 beds are reserve for ‘Managed Alcohol Residents’. These clients have successfully graduated from the level one Managed Alcohol Program at 233 Murray Street. Their alcohol levels have been stabilized and they have shown they are ready for a successful transition from the ‘shelter system’ to more of a long term care facility.
On top of the 45 domiciliary beds, 10 additional beds are allocated towards the Shepherds partnership with Canadian Mental Health Association. These residents have been identified as having specific medical issues and would benefit from the presence of Inner City Health.
Inner City has staffing presence 24 hours a day. In addition to client care workers around the clock, the program also has a registered nurse on site 40 hours a week, weekly rounds by a mental health practitioner and Dr. Jeff Turnbull and his medical team.

The Oaks is a gated community which offers multiple tranquil areas outside for residents to enjoy. The program has a BBQ area, patio sets, a large deck and a vegetable garden facilitated by the residents themselves.
