Anna’s Thoughts

Fall is definitely in the air and so is love and often with love comes marriage.  Recently our Senior Manager of Housing, Stephen proposed to the love of his life, Orla and they decided to do something special for Shepherds of Good Hope in honour of their upcoming nuptials.  Stephen and Orla decided to purchase a leaf on our Tree of Hope to benefit the clients living in our Hope Living residence.  They have a personal page on our web site with a photo of the two of them. In lieu of gifts for their wedding both Stephen and Orla are asking their guests to contribute to their leaf. Any shortcoming will be picked up by Stephen and Orla. Our Tree of Hope Campaign will be used to raise the much needed funds to update the residence.  We have already $110,000 raised for the campaign.

Click here if you would like to donate towards the Campaign.

If you would like to set up a personal page in honour of your special event, contact Lauren at lauren@shepherdsofgoodhope.com or (613) 789-8210 ext. 237.  As always, if you have any questions about our organization, the work we do or would like a tour of our facilities please call me directly at (613) 789-8210 #247 or email me at asilverman@shepherdsofgoodhope.com.

Eulogio finds Success

Shepherds of Good Hope offers its client base a myriad of programming to help them move from one level of support to another in the hope that each person can experience success.

Eulogio is one of those clients.  He hails from El Salvador but has been living in Canada for 15 years.  He has a colourful past – a former guerilla fighter in the civil war, he was shot in the leg and now has a limp which hinders his ability to do hard, physical labour.

Eulogio is a quiet man with few friends and takes solace in drinking heavily at times which is a great impediment to his ability to succeed.  He has always strived to work and when he came to Shepherds of Good Hope he was encouraged to move into our Worker Dorm Program, one of the many programs that has helped Eulogio. The Worker Dorm Program provided him with several advantages. He could accommodate his work schedule, keep his belongings in his locker, come and go as he needed, get assistance finding more permanent housing and could save up enough money to put down his first and last month’s rent for a place outside of the shelter system.

This was a win/win situation for Eulogio.  He soon found work on a construction company as a flag person.  He moved through the Worker Program A at the shelter where he worked on his addiction to alcohol.  He moved on into the Worker Program B where he worked on money management and he moved from there into the Enhanced Support Program where he worked on his life skills in preparation for a place of his own.  At the same time, he began attending the Good Day Workshop, where he learned to refinish furniture and feel a sense of community as well. He so enjoys the experience that he is making it a regular habit to work there. Working at the Good Day Workshop is providing Eulogio with valuable work skills and a heightened self esteem in a friendly, warm and welcoming environment

Eulogio is one of our many success stories. We are thankful that we could help Eulogio and the many others that come to us daily.  With your assistance we can continue to reach out and improve lives. To help us help others like Eulogio please click here.

Meet a Monthly Donor

Frank (real name withheld) is a monthly donor with a purpose.  Frank has always been very close to his family and when his only sister and brother-in-law passed away he watched his nephew, their son, start to unravel. “Ronny was always a fragile boy, he said. He was totally lost when his Mother passed away from Cancer and his Father less than 6 months later from an industrial accident.”

Ronny turned to the bottle in an effort to sooth his heartache.  He lost his job and his health was in jeopardy.  Frank kept track of Ronny’s whereabouts and found out that Ronny was living at Shepherds of Good Hope.  He would visit him in the Emergency Men’s Shelter and saw the dedicated staff providing Ronny with structure and restoring his dignity.  Ronny was on the road to healing. He met others like himself that had atrocities happen to them and he knew that he was not alone. He also knew that with the support of the medical and mental health staff he would be able to one day stand and face his loss with strength.

Frank is so thankful that there is a Shepherds of Good Hope and each month he can be sure that his donation is going to help Ronny and others like him.

Hope Living Open House

On October 23, 2013 we opened the doors of our newest supportive living facility in Kanata to the public. Approximately 60 visitors joined the staff and residents of Hope Living to have tours and hear speakers.

Adam Smith, President and Chair of Shepherds of Good Hope, as well as Ottawa City Councillor, Allan Hubley spoke to guests about the program.

Our Tree of Hope was also unveiled and looks absolutely gorgeous!

Our visitors were very excited to see how the property is being updated and refurbished.  Guests and residents all agreed that the event was a wonderful way to encourage a feeling of neighbour helping neighbour.
