Renewal 2018

Would you do me a favour? Would you hum a few notes from your favourite song?

How did that make you feel? Did it make you smile? Maybe it reminded you of a special memory – a first dance or a child’s lullaby? It’s amazing how something as simple as a song can bring up such powerful emotions.

So why was I so surprised when I heard a man humming his favourite song the other day?

Because that man was sitting in our soup kitchen. He was all alone. His clothes were torn and ragged; barely enough to keep him warm during the cold January weather. But he was happy. He was smiling ear to ear, humming an old Sinatra song.

Why was he humming?

He told me the song reminded him of his childhood – the last time he could remember feeling loved. He said being at the Shepherds soup kitchen reminded him of that feeling. This was the first time since his childhood he felt like someone cared about him.

The person who cared about him was you.

You gave this man a warm meal to eat on a cold January night. You gave him a bed to sleep in. You showed him you care. You reached out and you told him he wasn’t alone.

By donating to Shepherds of Good Hope, you show our community’s homeless men and women that you care. Your gifts ensure those in need have a warm meal to eat, a place to sleep and, most importantly, a feeling they belong.

I see the impact your gifts make on our community’s homeless each day because I am the Vice President of the Shepherds of Good Hope Foundation. I am blessed to witness the changes you make in the lives of our community’s homeless.

You give the homeless a chance to get back on their feet, fight their addictions, access medical and mental health services and reconnect with loved ones. You make hope possible for the men and women who need our help.

Hope and dignity are wonderful gifts.

Working at one of Ottawa’s largest homeless shelters, I’ve learned winter can be one of the hardest times of the year for the homeless. The cold weather brings a new set of challenges. By supporting Shepherds of Good Hope, you bring these individuals in from the cold.

There are so many people who desperately need your help.

Shelter programs are over capacity. People are sleeping on mats in the hallways because there aren’t enough beds for everyone. Shepherds recently recorded the busiest dinner the soup kitchen has ever had. We served over 400 hungry people in just 3 hours.

The situation is critical. But there is something you can do to help. Renew your support for Shepherds of Good Hope today and you give the homeless what they so desperately need – access to food, shelter and a life of dignity.

Shepherds can’t do it without you. You are the reason so many will have a place to escape the cold this winter. You are the reason so many will feel that someone cares.

Wishing you all the best for the year to come,

Neil M. Leslie
Vice President
Shepherds of Good Hope Foundation

P.S. This winter you can bring the homeless in from the cold. Renew your support for Shepherds of Good Hope today and give the homeless food, shelter and a life of dignity.
