Dan accepts a donation of socks from Christian Allan.

Once a month we give you the opportunity to meet some of the wonderful people who help care for Ottawa’s homeless population. This feature, Five Questions With … is posted to Facebook and our website on the 15th of each month. Enjoy.

Five Questions With … Dan G., our grocery and clothing coordinator.

 Q. What made you want to join the Shepherds’ team?

A. I kind of fell into it. I had recently moved back to Ottawa and a friend of mine who worked here recommended I apply because she thought I would enjoy it. Seven years later and I still love my job and all the great people I get to interact with every day!

Q. What is the best part of your job?

A. Getting to help our clients directly. There’s something to be said about being able to give someone a shirt, a tube of toothpaste, a loaf of bread or a meal when they might not have otherwise been able to access those things. It’s extremely humbling and makes me thankful for even the simplest things we take for granted every day.

Q. What would you be doing if you were not at your current job?

A. I’m not entirely sure but definitely something in the same field. There’s a community aspect to the social services that I really enjoy.

Q. What’s the one thing you would say about the people who rely on our grocery and clothing program?

A. They’re an extremely gracious group. Even on days when supplies are low everyone is thankful for what we do have and what we are able to give. On days when we do have some special extras, like pizza or fresh produce, everyone is so appreciative.

Q. What do you like to do when you’re not working at Shepherds of Good Hope?

A. Spending time with family and friends. I’m a bit of an outdoors type, hiking, camping and I have a small farm where I keep a few chickens and a decent sized garden. My wife and I are expecting a little one in the next month, so I’m sure that will keep me plenty busy, too!
