Henry touched by kindness

Oct 8, 2015 by

henryWhen Henry thinks about the staff at Shepherd of Good Hope, the first word that comes to mind is kindness.

Henry says no matter what he needs, someone is there to help him. If the first person doesn’t know the answer, then they find someone else to help him.

What impresses him the most day after day is the unrelenting kindness every staff member shows.

“It is like getting the red carpet treatment,” he says.

Henry doesn’t hesitate to say he can be a challenge on some days. Over the years he has battled substance abuse and alcoholism. One day he was invited to join the managed alcohol program at the downtown shelter. He hadn’t heard of the program but was impressed on day one.

In the program, Henry has his own bed. He socializes with other men and women in a shared common room and kitchen. He has a choice of what he can eat for lunch and dinner. If he has an appointment to keep, someone is there to remind him and to make sure he gets there on time.

He says the biggest advantage of MAP is it reduces his temptation for excessive drinking. Living on the street, he says, it’s easy to fall back into very bad habits. He knows from experience that to discover a better future he has to surround himself with people who have his best interests at heart. MAP allows him to do that.

Henry says he has stumbled before in the past and knows he might stumble again. But he adds this time is different. He knows he always has a family at Shepherds of Good Hope. He knows there are dedcated men and women here who will help him if he stumbles.
